Timeline
-
1914
The origins of Benton-Georgia, Inc. actually trace back to 1914 and was known as the R. J. Reid Construction Company and whose principals were R. J. Reid and H. E. Lowe. Their principal line of work was the reconstruction of bridges and culverts along railroad rights-of-way in Virginia and North Carolina. Mr. J. T. Benton was introduced to the firm as an "auditor" who was sent to work with the firm to look after the interest of the hardware company who had loaned materials to R. J. Reid.
-
1918
During the latter part of World War I the trio of Reid, Lowe and Benton remained together and traveled south following the railroad business along the Tennessee River to Florence, Alabama. It was then that the permanent offices were established in Birmingham, Alabama.
-
1920's
During the 1920's the company remained entrenched in the railroad business constructing trestles and laying and removing track. The company began working all over the southeastern United States.
-
1930
In 1930 W. K. "Pete" Zeis, Sr. joined the company and it was later in the 1930's that Pete actually began the laying of gas distribution pipe. Pete was also directly responsible for some very large projects with Mobile Gas Services Corporation that included river and swamp crossings.
-
1945
As the second World War was waging the firm was still involved in railroad work but had diversified into gas, water lines and stripping coal in Alabama.
-
1946
Shortly after the war, 1946, Pete Sr. was sent to Atlanta to oversee two gas line crews that were engaged in a four month project. It was then that Pete Sr. started the relationship with one of the largest natural gas distributors in the southeast, a relationship that remains extremely robust today.
-
1950's
The company went through some ownership changes during the 1950's as Mr. Benton became a partner with R. J. Reid and then took sole ownership after Mr. Reid's death in 1956.
-
1961
A new company emerged as Benton Contracting Company, Inc. The company officers were Benton, Sr., Zeis and Benton, Jr. The firm managed to obtain significant work from Mobile Gas Services Corporation and became thoroughly entrenched in the natural gas distribution business.
-
1969
Mr. W. K. "Pete" Zeis, Jr. began his tenure at Benton in 1969 and managed to work in the Chattanooga, Dalton and Newnan areas during his first few years. The company was awarded a significant amount of work from their largest customer in the Newnan area and thus the Newnan office was established. Pete was then promoted to General Superintendent of the Georgia Division of Benton Contracting.
-
1975
The company began to work in the Telecommunication industry by contracting work for BellSouth.
-
1976
As the company grew it was decided that Douglasville was a more appropriate location for its corporate headquarters and the company relocated in 1976. This location remains the corporate offices today.
-
1988
The current ownership structure was created in 1988 when brothers Pete and Steve Zeis bought the company and changed the name to Benton-Georgia, Inc. (BGI.) Pete and Steve are utility construction professionals who actually worked a combined 30+ years for the previous Benton organization years before assuming ownership. Both brothers are at the helm today, now totalling 64 years of experience, and they share the same kind of work ethic that has earned the company the reputation that is held in high regard by their peers in the industry.
-
1996

-
